Mobile District History

In 2003, the Mobile District of the US Army Corps of Engineers hired Brockington to prepare a history of the District from 1985 to 2004. The contract specified that a series of oral history interviews with members of the District be conducted. The District hoped to obtain a historical evaluation of the successes and failures of District policies and work since the mid-1980s.

Our historian interviewed 51 current and past members of the District, from clerks to commanders.

The Mobile District is one of the largest US Army Corps of Engineers districts, with a regional, national, and international scope of responsibilities. The interviews dealt with the Mobile District’s fourfold authorization: US waterways management and project construction, US Army and Air Force military construction, management of US Army Corps of Engineers Latin American projects, and environmental permitting. The interviews were an integral part of the book, entitled As Mobile Goes, So Goes the Corps: A History of the Mobile District, US Army Corps of Engineers, 1985–2004, prepared by Brockington.
